Dr. Shampur N. Madhusudana, who served in the Department of Neurovirology at NIMHANS, Bangalore, was an accomplished international expert in Rabies.
Dr. Madhusudana started his remarkable career in the area of rabies prevention spanning more than three decades, as Assistant Director (Rabies division) at Central Research Institute (CRI), Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, India. One of his major contributions to the rabies field during his service at NIMHANS was establishing a state-of- the-art rabies diagnostic laboratory, which is one of its kinds in the whole of India. In addition, under his able stewardship the department became the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Rabies.
It was Professor Madhusudana’s initiative to develop the intradermal vaccination, an economical approach to effectively prevent rabies, which is currently practiced in several anti-rabies clinics across the country. He also pioneered in conducting clinical trials for new rabies vaccines and in providing valuable insights into the pathogenesis of rabies through his research. In addition, Dr. Madhusudana conducted noteworthy research on development of novel vaccines. The numerous publications in reputed medical journals, innumerable national and international awards in recognition of his contribution to the rabies field, and the comprehensive book on rabies published by him stand testimony to Prof. Madhusudana’s commitment towards understanding rabies and its prevention. Prof. Madhusudana was an amicable individual with tremendous enthusiasm for sharing his wealth of experience in the field as a teacher and yet had a child-like inquisitiveness to learn more! Prof. Madhusudana has left an outstanding legacy for many among the younger generations to be inspired to pursue his efforts towards a Rabies free world!
